A woman is dead and a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputy is nursing injuries after a crash on Mike Padgett Highway on Thursday afternoon.
The woman has been identified as 34-year-old Dierdre Briggs. She was heading north on Highway 56 while Deputy Casey Donald was going in the opposite direction in response to an emergency call.
The GSP said the deputy had both his lights and sirens on as responded to a call involving a deputy who was in a fight.
Briggs reportedly turned left in front of the patrol car and the two vehicles collided in the crash on Mike Padgett Highway.
The Georgia State Patrol said Briggs was partially ejected from her vehicle. She was taken to AU Medical Center for treatment but she died at 9:14 p.m, the coroner’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said Donald received injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.
Meanwhile, a veteran Duluth police officer is recovering following injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash last Saturday.
Officer Ricky Porter received serious injuries while he was on patrol around 4:19 a.m.
Duluth police said the 12-year veteran was driving his marked patrol car along Peachtree Industrial Blvd. and approaching Abbotts Bridge Road when a Dodge Ram struck him. The driver hadn’t stopped at the red light at Abbotts Bridge Road.
Following the collision, the driver fled from the scene. However, he was arrested near the crash site a few hours later.
The driver has since been identified as 30-year-old Eduardo Gutierrez of Americus, Georgia.
He is facing charges of driving under the influence, hit and run, reckless driving, driving without a license, and more.
Gutierrez was booked into the Gwinnett County Adult Detention Center.
