The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Teams are investigating two deadly crashes that took place in Middle Georgia over the weekend.
The victims have been identified as 57-year-old Keith Taylor of Sylvania and 34-year-old Amie Chambers of Milledgeville.
Taylor died on Saturday night in a four-vehicle crash that occurred in the westbound lane of I-16 in the area of Ga.26 at Mile Post 35. The crash took place at 11:30 p.m.
A 2019 Toyota Corolla driven by 23-year-old Warner Robins resident Dakota James Crofutt rear-ended the trailer of Taylor’s 2008 Cadillac Escalade, the GSP said.
This caused the Escalade to rotate clockwise. The trailer came off and ended up in the center median of the interstate.
A 2018 Nissan Titan then struck the car, causing the Escalade to flip over and land against a guardrail in the northern emergency lane.
Another vehicle hit Taylor, who was no longer in the Escalade. That driver did not stop at the scene.
The GSP said it was not immediately clear if Taylor was ejected from his vehicle in the collision or if he had gotten out and was standing in the street.
Meanwhile, Crofutt’s Toyota Corolla went onto the north shoulder of the interstate. He was charged with driving under the influence.
The other accident took place on Friday just before 11 p.m. Chambers and another individual were traveling in a Yamaha Raptor 700 four-wheeler that was being chased by a Hancock County sheriff’s deputy.
The GSP said the vehicle left the roadway when the driver tried to turn onto Pumping Station Road from St. Mark Church Road.
The four-wheeler hit an embankment and guy-wire and overturned. Both the driver and the passenger were ejected and GSP said it was not clear who was the driver and who was the passenger.
Chambers was taken to the Augusta Medical Center for treatment, but she passed away on Sunday. The other individual suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the deputy’s cruiser went off the road and struck a tree. The deputy, identified as Ricky Benford, was treated at the Medical Center Naviscent Health and discharged. If you’re involved in a wreck, contact our Georgia car accident attorneys today.
