Boy Killed in Head-On Collision in Southwest Atlanta

A four-year-old boy has died and his father is hospitalized in critical condition after a head-on collision in Southwest Atlanta on Wednesday, March 31. The authorities say the head-on collision took place around 4:30 p.m. and involved a stolen SUV.

Police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said officers saw a Honda Pilot close to Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Metropolitan Parkway. Someone in DeKalb County had reported the SUV stolen.

The vehicle was driven by a 15-year-old and he was transporting five passengers.

The teenager reportedly took off when he noticed the officers and shortly after, the vehicle collided with a Lexus in the 1400 block of Lakewood Avenue.

Four-year-old Demarcus Grier and his father were in the Lexus. The two were rushed to hospital where Demarcus succumbed to his injuries.

Relatives said the two lived just a few blocks away from where the accident occurred and they were returning home when they were struck.

The authorities said four of the individuals who were in the SUV fled but the driver and a 17-year-old passenger were detained at the scene.

The 17-year-old has been identified as Demarcus Laney and he has been charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 18. He was released on a citation.

Meanwhile, the 15-year-old driver is facing a charge of theft by receiving stolen property. Police said he was released to a parent.

Investigations into the head-on collision in Southwest Atlanta are ongoing and further charges are pending given the child’s death.
