A DeKalb police sergeant died on Saturday, January 2, after a car hit him on the Downtown Connector.
Sergeant Daniel Mobley was struck around 9 a.m. as he responded to a crash involving another police officer in the area of the Williams Street exit.
The 22-year veteran was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was 44 years old.
Police Chief Mirtha Ramos said the vehicle struck Mobley as he was getting out of his patrol car.
The officer involved in the initial crash did not suffer any injuries but he was shaken up by the subsequent fatality.
Ramos said the DeKalb County Police Department had lost one of its guardian angels.
As the news spread through metro Atlanta, other law enforcement agencies offered condolences on social media and Governor Brian Kemp expressed his sympathies.
The police department said Mobley was an exemplary officer who was devoted to his son.
Mobley’s colleagues said he was also a big Ford fan who worked under the hood of his cars when he had free time.
A police spokeswoman said he joined the department in 1998 and was often designated as the officer-in-charge because of his strong work ethic.
Mobley was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2017 and assigned to the North-Central Precinct.
He became the 32nd DeKalb County officer to ever be killed in the course of duty and the second to be killed in the United States for the year so far. On Friday, January 1, a Myrtle Beach police sergeant died in a car crash while responding to a call.
The Georgia State Patrol is looking into the crash that killed Mobley and forced the closure of the Downtown Connector’s southbound lanes for about four hours.
