A 70-year-old man was struck and killed as he attempted to cross I-20 near the Highway 138 interchange on Sunday evening. The accident had a domino effect and one of the resulting wrecks claimed the lives of a passenger in a vehicle.
A statement from the Georgia State Patrol identified the pedestrian as David Ray Westberg of Conyers. He was attempting to cross the westbound lanes after 6:30 p.m. when he was hit by a Nissan Maxima. It is not known why he was trying to cross the highway.
Two secondary crashes forced the closure of most of the westbound lanes in the area of mile marker 82. In one case, a Toyota SUV driven by a Covington man stopped for the first accident and was rear-ended by a Nissan pickup truck.
A backseat passenger in the Toyota died from injuries received in the crash. she was identified as 25-year-old Miriam Porras of Dallas, Texas.
Three other vehicles also became involved in accidents, but no details were released.
The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is following up situation.
Pedestrian accidents have been on the increase in The Peach State, according to the 2018 Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes: Overview published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Although the overall number of traffic deaths dropped for two straight years, pedestrian fatalities increased for a third straight year. In 2018, there were 261 pedestrian deaths, eight more than in 2017. The report stated that pedestrian deaths increased by 60 percent over the previous five years.
