Five killed in Crash Involving Sedan, MARTA Bus

March 22, 2020

Two young children were among five people who were killed last Wednesday night when the car in which they were traveling collided head-on with a MARTA bus in northwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police said the accident happened around 10:45 p.m. on Bolton Road, south of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway.

Officers reported that the driver of a Nissan Sentra lost control of the vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic prior to colliding with the bus.

Seven people were traveling in the Nissan. The five who died included 22-year-old Kareema Floyd and her children four-year-old Kareema Floyd and 19-month-old Kejuan Floyd. Seventeen-year-old Keshundra Murray and 14-year-old Ashanti Hill also died.

Kareema’s mother, Shaunta Floyd, said her daughter was one of a twin, and she was expecting another baby.

A 28-year-old driver and a 12-year-old passenger survived. Their names were not released. A police spokesman said the two were in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital the morning after the crash.

Shaunta Floyd said police came to her door around two o’clock on Thursday morning and woke the family with the news.

Meanwhile, the bus driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

MARTA spokeswoman Stephany Fisher added that two passengers were on the bus when the accident occurred but neither of them reported injuries.

Fisher said a second car smashed into the Nissan after the initial collision. The occupants of that vehicle did not suffer any injuries.

Atlanta police Captain F. Turner said in his 25 years with the police department, this was the worst accident he encountered.

Police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
