Hit-And-Run Driver Accused of Injuring Motorcyclist Surrenders

A day after police in Gwinnett County said they were hunting for a driver who injured a motorcyclist, the man reached out to officers.

Police spokesman Cpl. Michele Pihera revealed that 32-year-old Christopher Johnson contacted officers on Friday and revealed that he was driving the Ford Mustang involved in their investigations.

The crash took place around 6:45 a.m. on June 10 at the junction of Duluth Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway, according to police.

Johnson allegedly struck a Kawasaki motorcycle while turning right onto Sugarloaf Parkway.

The 30-year-old motorcyclist, Kelby Smith, was shoved across multiple lanes and was partially thrown from his bike, a police incident report stated.

Officers released a description of the Mustang on Thursday morning and appealed for members of the public to help them locate the driver.

Johnson, a resident of Lawrenceville, has been charged with hit-and-run resulting in serious injury, driving with a suspended registration, driving without insurance, and failure to report an accident.

He was released from jail after he posted a $6,850 bond.

Meanwhile, in a separate matter, a Loganville man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after he snorted pills and caused a fatal crash in Covington.

Forty-year-old Johnny Cowart Jr. admitted to snorting Adderall and Xanax before a head-on crash that resulted in the death of Paula Boozer in January 2018.

He was convicted earlier this year of homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle and driving under the influence.

Prosecutors said Cowart veered into oncoming traffic and crashed into another vehicle on Washington Street.

He didn’t have prescriptions for the drugs.

Boozer was a passenger in the other vehicle. Both Cowart and the other driver sustained serious injuries.

Interim DA Randy McGinley revealed that Cowart was sentenced to 15 years in prison for vehicular homicide and given another 15 years of probation for serious injury by vehicle.
