Around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, what was supposed to be a regular evening in Albany turned into a nightmare. It affected not only those traveling on East Oakridge Drive but also several families whose loved ones were involved in a fatal crash, one dead and several injured in a multivehicle crash.
A vehicle crossing the median on Oakridge drive collided head-on with a motorcycle in the 100 block. Two other vehicles were involved. According to the scarce information available so far, one person was killed and several were injured.
The accident was reported through a phone call to the Dougherty County E-911 dispatch. Medical help was sent right away, and law enforcement officers hurried at the scene to investigate and manage traffic to avoid further accidents.
Unfortunately, it was too late for the motorcyclist. This goes to show, once again, that while motorcycles are a great solution to the crowded traffic in Albany and everywhere else, they are also dangerous. No one, no matter how skilled a rider, should operate a motorcycle without wearing a helmet and protective equipment.
Even with proper equipment, motorcycle accidents can be fatal. Unlike drivers, bikers have no metal frames and airbags to protect them. They are extremely vulnerable to impact with vehicles, asphalt, their own motorcycle, and other hard objects on or along the road.
East Oakridge Drive seems to become more dangerous by the day, as more and more lives are lost along it. Saturday’s death followed another tragic accident occurred on Friday afternoon the previous week.
A car broke down and stopped in the middle of the intersection and was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler. Three women were in it. The one sitting in the back, 49-year old Pamela Evette White died and the other two women sharing the vehicle with her were injured.
