Missing Woman Identified as Victim of Sumter County Crash

The authorities in Sumter County have revealed that a mother who was reported missing in July was involved in a fatal crash.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said the accident likely happened on the same day 30-year-old Rosa Welch was reported missing.

On August 16 around 6:30 p.m., deputies, fire officers, and others were called to the scene of an accident at mile marker 19 on Highway 27 East.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was Welch who was reported missing on July 6.

Coroner Greg Hancock said an autopsy had been conducted on Welch’s body, but the findings would not be released immediately.

As is standard, the coroner’s office is conducting a toxicology report and the results could take up to three months.

Hancock said the labs were strained because of COVID-19 tests.

The Georgia State Patrol conducted an accident investigation at the scene. One of the main goals is to determine why Welch’s vehicle left the road.

The sheriff’s office said Welch was traveling east on Highway 27 when her Jeep Cherokee left the road and hit a tree.

The authorities said she died on impact and foul play was not suspected.

The Jeep was reportedly not visible from the road in the rural area. However, a passerby saw a reflection and called the sheriff’s office.

Chief Deputy Coronel with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Eric Bryant, said there was nothing in the vehicle to indicate that Welch was impaired.

Bryant said he believes Welch was approximately 100 yards or more off the highway.

He said a search for the Jeep was conducted in that area when Welch was first reported missing.

However, he noted that her vehicle was not detected either by a plane or from the road.

GSP, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, and the Sumter County Coroner’s Office will continue to investigate.
