A 17-year-old from Berrien County died in a traffic accident on October 12. He has been identified as Keagan H. Kung-Korte of Nashville. He was involved in a single-car wreck on Old Valdosta Road close to its junction with Camp Tygart Road, around 3:20 p.m, according to the Berrien County Sheriff Ray Paulk and Georgia State Patrol.
The authorities said Kung-Korte’s Hyundai Elantra failed to stay in its lane and struck a mailbox before spinning and striking a tree and fence. It then came to a stop in a ditch.
The teenager’s mother, Rebecca Kung, said he was about two miles away from his home when the crash occurred. She also reported that her husband passed the crash on his way home.
Kung said when the car struck the fence, the wood went through the front window and sliced Kung Korte’s carotid artery.
Sheriff Paulk said deputies found the boy dead at the scene. Kung said police told her that her son would have been okay if the cut had been off by just two centimeters.
Kung-Korte was dual-enrolled at Berrien High School and Valdosta State University and he was in his senior year of high school.
Kung said her only child was smart, and he excelled in school. He was thinking about going to Emory University and then returning to VSU for his master’s. Kung said Kung-Korte loved animals, and was interested in social work and counseling but also entertained thoughts of becoming an environmental engineer.
Officials have not said what caused the boy’s car to leave the road.
