A man who was trying to evade Georgia state troopers died in a fiery Macon crash on Saturday morning, May 1, after his pickup truck crashed and burst into flames. He has been identified as 35-year-old Angelo D’wan Martin.
The Georgia State Patrol said the chase started around 12:30 a.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a Ford F-150 that was speeding on Riverside Drive close to 1-75 in Macon.
The authorities said Martin was driving at 72 mph in a 45 mph zone. GSP spokeswoman Franka Young said he refused to stop and a pursuit began.
Martin reportedly made a left turn onto Corbin Avenue, then a right onto North Nancelon Circle and lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. Martin became trapped inside the pickup truck which caught fire.
The authorities said troopers tried to extinguish the fire and pull Martin to safety but they couldn’t get him out. According to Young, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Martin lived nearby. The Georgia Department of Public Safety said the trooper’s patrol car made no contact with Martin’s truck before the crash.
This fiery Macon crash occurred less than a week after another man who was feeling state troopers broadsided a car in Dekalb County and killed a 60-year-man. Troopers were trying to stop that driver for a suspected seatbelt violation. He is now facing several charges including felony murder and first-degree vehicular homicide.
