Two people were killed on Thursday night after a man who was escaping from police crashed into the back of a pickup truck.
The man was driving a stolen car. The accident occurred on Interstate-75 in northwest Georgia.
Police said the chase started around 10:30 p.m. in Ringgold after a man reported that someone had stolen his Ford Mustang from the Circle K convenience store on Battlefield Parkway.
Ringgold police said the owner of the car parked the vehicle at a gas pump and ran inside the store, leaving the keys in the car.
A bystander jumped in the Mustang and drove off.
The suspect then drove into a nearby cul-de-sac on Smitherman Road. When he circled back and passed the gas station again, a Catoosa County deputy and a Ringgold police officer were waiting.
Instead of stopping for the officers, police said the driver continued going north onto I-75.
In a statement, the Georgia State Patrol said the man drove recklessly at speeds well over 100 miles per hour in the far-left lane.
The GSP said the driver was trying to switch from the left lane to the middle lane when they rear-ended a Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The impact pushed the pickup across the northbound lanes, through a guardrail, and into oncoming traffic. The pickup rolled multiple times before it stopped in the center lanes.
The driver of the stolen Mustang was ejected from the vehicle and both he and the other driver died.
Police said the suspect was not wearing a seatbelt.
The names of the two individuals will be released after their families have been notified.
Investigations into the crash will continue.
