ATLANTA – A driver who police believe was under the influence was arrested on Monday after driver rolls into the front doors of a Midtown gas station.
A worker at the Chevron station at the corner of 10th and Spring streets said the man fell asleep behind the wheel while he was parked at the pumps.
The employee woke him around 6 a.m. and the man’s foot came off the brakes and the car started to move forward. The vehicle shattered the glass doors and ended up partially inside the gas station’s food mart.
The motorist was later identified as 27-year-old Jarvis Williams. Police Investigator James White said the driver’s behavior suggested he was intoxicated, and he was arrested and charged with DUI and reckless driving.
In Georgia, a driver can be charged with driving under the influence if:
- A law enforcement officer determines they are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
- A blood or breath test shows a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher
Penalties include fines, jail time and community service.
Williams was expected to be sent to the Fulton County Jail.
There was no damage to the structure of the building and no one was injured. However, that isn’t always the case when drunk drivers get behind the wheel.

In 2017, there were 3.51 impaired or drunken driving deaths per 100,000 people in Georgia. While the majority of cases don’t result in fatalities, many result in serious injuries.
